Maria Manuel Lira (b. 1971, Lisbon, Portugal) is a contemporary painter and printmaker based in Lisbon. She works with oil paintings on canvas and specializes in diferent printmaking techniques such as aquatints, spit bites, sugar lifts, and lately, photogravure with photopolymer. Lira is best known for her distinctive figurative language, depicting women in casual urban settings.
Her work explores themes of women's conditions and contemporary feminine issues, addressing subjects such as identity, societal roles, and the psychological challenges faced by women today. Lira's artistic practice is characterized by expressive compositions that combine personal narratives with broader social commentary, often portraying figures in intimate and reflective moments.
Maria Manuel Lira has exhibited at Associação de Gravura Água Forte and A Base Escola de Arte in Lisbon. Her works are part of various private national and international collections. She has participated in the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London, “Small but Mighty” by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in London, and an artist residency at A Base Escola de Arte in Lisbon.
